Spain – Significant rise in online gaming in Spain

According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling’s (DGOJ) 3rd quarterly report on the development of the online gambling market (July-September 2018) GGR for the quarter stood at €181.77m an increase of 8.74 per cent over the previous quarter and an increase over the same quarter in 2017 of 29.86 per cent.

Of the €181.77m GGR €97.65m over half (53.72 per cent) was generated by sports betting. €60.85 million was generated via online casinos (33.48 per cent) €19.81m via Poker (10.9 per cent).€3.14m via Bingo (1.73 per cent) while GGR for competitions stood at €0.32m (0.18 per cent).

The sports betting segment experienced a growth rate of 11.46 per cent compared to the previous quarter and 27.41 per cent year on year. The growth is mainly down to in play betting which grew by as much 15.56 per cent while conventional bets increased by 6.72 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile bingo experienced a decrease of -4.16 per cent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 11.26 per cent with respect to the same quarter in 2017. The online casino sector continued to grow increasing by 7.74 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2018 and reported an annual variation of 39.19 per cent. According to the DGOJ, the growth in the online casino sector is mainly due to online slots, which were first permitted in 2015, which has in turn led to an increasingly higher market share.

Poker filed an increase of 1.87 per cent over the previous quarter and an increase of 35.11 per cent year on year. The increase is mainly due to cash poker, which recorded a growth in the quarter of 7.1 per cent. Marketing spend in the quarter grew significantly standing at €75.86m, an annual growth of 56.28 per cent. Broken down into segments companies spent €7.42m on affiliate marketing; € 3.5m on sponsorship; €28.56m on promotions; and €36.38m on advertising. Compared to the previous quarter, this expense decreased -6.87 per cent, mainly due to a -11.46 per cent decrease in advertising spend.
The monthly average number active users stood at 812,007, a growth of 30.71 per cent with respect to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile the monthly average of new registrations stood at 232,012 users an annual decrease of -1,93 per cent.

Earlier this month The University of Carlos III Madrid and the CODERE Foundation presented their Annual Report on Gambling in Spain. According to report, overall gaming grew for the third consecutive year in Spain in 2017. In 2017, GGR stood at €9,408 million, eight per cent more than in 2015. 94 per cent corresponded to the land based market and 6 per cent to online gambling. The greatest growth occurred in the online space, which grew more than 30 per cent.
