Chile – Sun Monticello reopens after double shooting

By - 21 July 2017

Sun Monticello, Chile’s largest casino has reopened following the murder of two of its dealers as they worked the tables.

The double shooting was carried out by a problem gambler, Osvaldo Campos Azocar, 42, who had fallen into debt. The incident, which took place after the player had lost more than £20,000, his life savings at the roulette table, saw the country’s gambling regulator call for a review of the casino’s security measures. The man later committed suicide by lethal injection in one of the casino’s toilets, having locked himself in the bathrooms for 17 hours. Police said six others, whose names have not been released, are being treated in hospital. Eight people were injured in total.

“Officers decided to enter the building, and they found the man was dead,” a police spokesperson said.
.The casino had been closed for almost two weeks after the shooting. Vivien Villagran, the superintendent of casinos in Chile said the operators could be sanctioned for a lack of security.
