China – Two poker rooms closed and a tournament postponed in Macau

By - 8 May 2018

Already shaken by the game’s recent ban on Chinese social media apps, Macau’s poker sector has been hit with another blow this month with two poker rooms in the region closing along with the cancellation of a new tournament.

Poker rooms have closed at City of Dreams and Galaxy Macau whilst the International Poker Tour Macau (IPT), which was to be hosted by Alibaba’s offshoot Alisports May 16 to 20 has been postponed.

The closing of the poker room at City of Dreams Macau ends a contract between the casino and PokerStars that began in 2013.

Eric Hollreiser, Vice President of Corporate Communications for The Stars Group, said: “We can confirm that the PokerStars partnership with City of Dreams Macau has come to an end. We are working on ensuring that we can continue to bring high quality live events in Asia.”

Galaxy Macau has also shut its poker room, which had been in operation since September 2015 with eight tables – six cash tables and two for Sit’n’Gos and tournaments.

The IPT Macau was due to take place at the Venetian in Macau later this month.

The IPT Organizing Committee said: “After careful consideration, the IPT Organizing Committee has decided to postpone their stop in Macao. IPT 2018 matches will be rescheduled as soon as possible.”

Only a few tournaments remain on the Macau poker calendar, including the Asian Poker Tour housed at the Macau Billionaire Club whilst poker rooms remain open at casinos like the Wynn and Venetian.
