Cyprus – Cyprus approves law for super, satellite and three slot only casinos

By - 13 July 2015

The Cypriot parliament has now passed legislation that will allow the first-ever casino resort to be built in the south of the island.

The legislation will allow for the development, operation, supervision and control of a casino with 100 tables and 1,000 slots as well as a smaller satellite casino and another three slot halls.

The vote came in at 29 votes to 22 to allow the legislation, which is seen as a key part of the government’s plans to boost the island’s debt-ridden euro zone economy. The government is hoping the main resort will be open by 2018. The winning bidder will choose where the resort will be built.

President Nicos Anastasiades said: “Approval of the legislation is another step in the government’s big effort to turn our country in an investment centre. A casino will enrich our tourism product, upgrade its standing on the tourist map and create the conditions for new jobs.”
