Fiji – One Hundred Sands development underway

By - 14 June 2013

The company behind Fiji’s first casino says the delays are over and construction of the multi-million dollar project on Denarau Island near Nadi will start in a matter of days. The Fiji regime granted the casino license to the American company One Hundred Sands in December 2011 and construction was expected to start last year.

The attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum then extended the deadline for construction to the start by the end of May and said there would be consequences if it wasn’t. However, owner of the company, Larry Claunch, says it was a mutual deadline and they are pleased they have been able to work through the complications associated with building a casino.

He says the first priority is to get sub-contractors on the site before they organise a main contractor. Under the original timeline, the 500 slot machine and 32 table casino, which includes a race and sports book, high stakes gaming area and convention centre, was due to open in October this year, but Mr Claunch says that will now be mid to late 2014.

One Hundred Sands’ gaming licence allows the company to develop and execute a slot machine and table gaming leasing agreement to transfer a portion of its right to the 20,000 slot machine and 5,000 table games allotted in its licence to any future gaming operations conducted in Fiji.
