Germany – Privatisation could quadruple casino numbers in North Rhine-Westphalia

By - 13 December 2018

The planned privatisation of the state-owned casinos Westdeutschen Spielbank GmbH (WestSpiel) in North Rhine-Westphalia may lead to an increase from four to 16 casinos.

The current national ban on online gaming may also then be subject to scrutiny. A new state gaming law would be required to enables these changes.

At present, WestSpiel operates casinos in the cities of Aachen, Bad Oeynhausen, Dortmund and Duisburg with a fifth location being developed in Cologne. The casino group belongs to the state-owned NRW Bank. It is believed that a privatisation of WestSpiel is envisaged for the end of 2020.
