Israel – High Court allows Israel’s slots back on

By - 11 January 2017

Israel’s High Court of Justice has ruled that lottery company Mifal Hapayis can turn its slot machines back on a week after the Finance Ministry shut them down.

Justice Yoram Danzinger ruled that the company’s 650 machines should stay in operation whilst the sector is reviewed. The estate is made up of 500 slots and 150 keno machines.

Mifal Hapayis petitioned the High Court, claiming the machines were shut down without prior notice and this had seriously harmed their incomes.

A lawyer for the operator said: “Bettors continue to gamble but instead of the money going to Mifal Hapayis, which builds schools, it’s going into the pockets of loan sharks of the underworld. The treasury may want to save gamblers, but it’s causing them to sink deeper into the mud with loans from the gray market.”
