By - 26 October 2015

Greek company Intralot, which operates the popular numerical game of Tinka and is the leading lottery and sports betting company in Peru, has announced plans to further consolidate its operations in the region and strengthen its position as market leader.

In order to achieve its goals the company will invest over US$4m to expand its outlets from 3,600 at to 5,000 by the end of next year.

Vangelis Apostolakopoulos, Intralot CEO, explained that customers will be able to monitor bets on site via televisions and gaming machines. “We are now investing more in facilities and we are going to spend from US$2,000 to US$4,000 on each site,” he said.

The refurbishing and modernisation of its betting shops will go hand in hand with the other activities it offers such as live sports betting. The company launched its in live sports betting in June which allows customers to bet on football matches.

The company is also in talks with a number of local celebrities as well as a new football team over the promotion of its products. It is also in the process of increasing the number of sales points for its popular instant product Rapitinka. Combined this will strengthen further the 95 per cent market share it already has over the lottery and sports betting market in the region.

For Intralot, however, the market still has great potential for further growth. According to Mr. Apostolakopoulos penetration of gambling is still low compared to other countries in the region as it currently stand at US$5 per capita, compared to US $13 in Ecuador and US $31 in Chile.

Year on year growth is estimated to stand at 16 percent to 18 per cent this year. This will be lower rate of growth compared to 2014 which increased by 30 per cent due to FIFA World Cup in Brazil which saw a surge in interest in sports betting locally.

Intralot was first awarded a ten year licence in 2001 to run and administer state sponsored lotteries. Intralot lottery operations in Peru commenced on December 1 2003 with the launch of a daily lottery called Gana Diario (Win Daily) which was initially distributed through 1000 points of sale.
