Portugal – Portugal a step closer with appointment of certifying bodies

By - 13 October 2015

NMi Gaming has been chosen as a gambling technical system certifying organisation by the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ).

Following NMi’s invitation from the recently formed Portuguese gaming regulator, the SRIJ, to become an accredited certifying organisation, NMi the global compliance testing and auditing service provider is pleased to announce it has now been authorised to certify online gaming technical systems. The draft Legal Framework for online games in Portugal is still in a “standstill” position under the European Commission standard TRIS procedure ending November 6 2015.

To date only regulated and inspected land based games have been permitted in Portugal. The new online Legal Framework, defining multiple gaming categories in addition to technical requirements for online gambling systems, allows interested parties to apply for licences covering casino table games, bingo, sports betting, racing, and slots. NMi, as one of the first certified laboratories in Portugal anticipate the opening of licence applications towards the end of the year.

The latest appointment further advances the world leading gaming laboratory’s global coverage following recent accreditations in Peru, the Philippines, and Lithuania.

Julian Borg-Barthet, Business Development Manager for the NMi Gaming Division: “We are delighted to add Portugal to our accreditation list and look forward to this partnership going forward. Our clients rely on NMi being at the forefront of regulatory change and opportunity, and the invitation to enter the Portuguese market is just part of that commitment.”

The latest report follows a series of announcements as NMi experience continued business success; recent developments include expansion and additional office space in both the UK and Canada, an expanded security services division and numerous international accreditations.

Andrew Rosewarne, NMi, Director of Gaming commented: “Portugal is the latest major European country to go down the path of online regulation and NMi are already experiencing a high level of interest in certification for the jurisdiction. Gaming operators and suppliers can’t seem to get enough of our services at the moment. It’s been a busy time for compliance with UK level 3 and Spanish slot testing, and NMi is pleased it has managed to maintain our usual high level of service to existing customers, in addition to assisting new customers left out in the cold late in the process.”

NMi is an accredited gaming laboratory with over 40 years serving the gaming industry in Europe and across the world. As a centre of international expertise in testing, certification, calibration and training in the fields of metrology and gaming, NMi has laboratories in Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and the UK with representation worldwide.

Members of NMi’s Regulatory Affairs team will be attending the Gambling Compliance ‘Regulatory Briefing on the new Portuguese gambling legislation in a European context’ in December 2015.
