Spain – Melco’s BCN licence facing political delays

By - 15 January 2016

Melco International Development has said its plans to get the licence needed to develop a resort casino at BCN World, near Barcelona, will face further delays further delays due to new political uncertainties caused by delays in forming a coalition Catalan government.

In a filing to the stock exchange by Melco said: “Since this election outcome and the expiration of the master plan consultation period, there has been no public announcement from the Catalan government as to when the definitive master plan will be concluded. The timetable for a conclusion of the definitive master plan is relatively uncertain at this juncture and may potentially delay the finalisation of the master plan and subsequently the overall timetable of the tender process.”

The Catalan parliamentary elections took place in September 2015 but with no majority a coalition has to be formed. The two parties have only recently agreed to form a separatist government
If completed, BCN World, located an hour away from Barcelona in Tarragona, would be home to six casino resorts costing a total of €4.7bn.
