Spain – Online players increase by 20 per cent in Spain

The online gaming sector in Spain is growing according to the most recent report published by the The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

According to the report which was published on Tuesday (19th July) the number of active online players increased by 19.58 per cent, the number of average players a month increased by 16.18 per cent while the average expenditure per player increased by as much as 20.58 per cent.

The number of active players in each of the months of the year remains more or less stable around the average value of 379,883, with above average values were reported in the months of September to May and lower in the middle months of the year (June to August) while the minimum number of active players was reached in July. 28.3 per cent of players had played in just one month; 60.5 per cent (596,456) had been active for 4 months or less; 79.1 per cent (779,041) played 8 months or less while players who had been active every month amounted to 9.1 per cent of the total (89,869).

According to the demographic analysis of active players, players are mostly men (83 per cent) and under 46 years old (87 per cent). The most representative age profile, for both men and women, stands at between 26 and 35 years old and this group now accounts for 37 per cent of the total online players in Spain. The average player in Spain when it comes to betting, casino and poker is a man aged between 26 and 35 years old while for bingo it is a woman aged between 36 and 45 years old.

When it comes to preferred payment methods the most popular is via bank card (66 per cent in terms of number of transactions), followed by electronic wallets (16 per cent), and prepaid cards (11 per cent).

70.0 per cent of active players are, however, registered with just a single operator and during 2015, 61.7 per cent of active players took part in only one game and 18.3 per cent took part in two. These two groups accounted for 80 per cent all players while the average number of games played per player stood at 1.74.

The total volume of transactions stood at €848,960,454 in deposits while a total of €551,042,382 was made in withdrawals by players in 2015. Deposits were made by a total of 823,129 players (84 per cent) of active players while 323,504 players (33 per cent) made withdrawals.

Regarding player preferences per game type there was a substantial increase in the number of players over the previous year in a number of segments. Sports betting recorded a 34.39 per cent increase, bingo increased by 37.64 per cent and casino games reported a huge 80.44 per cent increase due to the fact that online slots were finally granted permission to operate in June. Meanwhile poker recorded a slight drop compared to the previous year.
