Spain – Spain’s online gaming revenues fall to €160m in Q1

According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) latest report on Spain’s online gaming market Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) stood at €163.3m in the first quarter of the year a decrease of 5.69 per cent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 28.85 per cent in relation to the same period in 2017.

Sports betting increased by 15.89 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2017 meaning that growth is decelerating as it increased 20.38 per cent in the first quarter of 2015, 30.33 per cent in 2016, and 20.48 per cent in 2017.

Meanwhile, the online casino sector showed the largest increase – 51.02 per cent year on year. The casino sector has been growing since 2015 with annual growth rates in the first quarter of 38 per cent in 2015; 105 per cent in 2016 and 49 per cent in 2017. Bingo also continued to grow increasing by 29.87 per cent year on year.

GGR per vertical stood at €81.87m for sports betting accounting for over half of GGR (50.04 per cent). GGR for online casinos stood at €56.52m (34.55 per cent). For Poker it stood at €21.47m (13.12 per cent), €3.54m for bingo (2.16 per cent) and €0.2m for contests (0.12 per cent).

There were significant changes to poker revenue in the first quarter, which recorded an annual variation of 41.59 per cent meaning a reversal to the downward trend of previous years after the sector had shown a slight increase in 2017. Annual variation in the first quarter for poker stood at -5.00 per cent in 2015, -12.03 per cent in 2016, and 2. 51 per cent in 2017.

Marketing spend in the quarter stood at €76.26m, an annual increase of 35.79 per cent. This in turn was made up of affiliate marketing expenses €6.26m; € 3.16m sponsorship; promotions €25.39m and advertising €41.45.

Meanwhile the average number of active users stood at 796,331, a growth of 24.36 per cent with respect to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile the monthly average for new registrations stood at 267,856 users, an annual growth of 27.87 per cent.
