Spain – World Cup leads to surge in sports betting but bingo and poker revenues down

According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) Gross Gaming Revenue GGR for the online gaming sector in Spain reached €167.2m for the second quarter an increase of 2.33 per cent compared to the previous quarter and a huge jump of 40.15 per cent year on year.

In the three months ending June 30 sports betting accounted for over half of GGR ; €87.60 (52,40 per cent). GGR for online casinos stood at €56.52 (33.80 per cent). For Poker it stood at €19.45m (11.63 per cent), €3.28m for bingo (1.96 per cent) and €0.34 for Contests (0.21 per cent).

As expected this year’s FIFA World Cup had a huge part to play in the surge in sports betting meaning that while it increased by as much as over 46.68 per cent compared to last year it only increased by 7.07 per cent compared to the previous quarter this year. Slots remain the most popular form of online casino gaming and made up over 51 per cent of the total. Overall casino gambling remained steady reporting an increase of less than one per cent compared to the previous quarter but in common with sports betting showed a marked improvement year on year increasing by as much as 36.86 per cent. But while bingo reported an increase of 16.91 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2017 it experienced a decrease of -6.76 per cent compared to the previous quarter.

According to the DGOJ poker revenue also increased by 34.8 per cent on a year-to-year basis However while this was encouraging sign for the sector overall this reflected a 9.4 per cent decrease compared to the last quarter. The first quarter of this year had seen significant changes to poker revenue, which recorded an annual variation of 41.59 per cent meaning a reversal to the downward trend of previous years after the sector had shown a slight increase in 2017. Annual variation in the first quarter for poker stood at -5.00 per cent in 2015, -12.03 per cent in 2016, and 2. 51 per cent in 2017.

Marketing spend in the quarter stood at €81.3m an increase of 55.2 per cent year on year. This in turn was made up of affiliate marketing expenses €7.6m; €2.95m sponsorship; promotions €29.6m and advertising €41.1m.
Meanwhile the average number of active users stood at 859,695, a growth of 31.74 per cent with respect to the same quarter of the previous year. The monthly average for new registrations stood at 268.094 users, an annual growth of 33.3 per cent.

According to the DGOJ first quarter report published in June, GGR stood at €163.3m in the first quarter of the year a decrease of 5.69 per cent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 28.85 per cent in relation to the same period in 2017.
