Sweden – Svenska Spel wants to curb ‘uncontrolled development’

By - 22 July 2015

Svenska Spel CEO Lennart Käll wants the government to crackdown on ‘uncontrolled development’ as the Swedish operator saw revenues for the six months to June 30 fall by 2.4 per cent.

First half revenue came in at SEK4.3bn (€459.1m) down from SEK4.5bn the previous year.

The state-owned operator said that during the first quarter its share of the Swedish market had fallen to 42 per cent, down four per cent from last year.

Svenska Spel claims the regulated market grew by three per cent during the year yet revenue from unlicensed foreign operators surged by 25 per cent. Swedish Spel’s online market share has decreased from 22.3 per cent last year to 21.6 per cent this year.

Mr. Käll said: “The result for the quarter increased slightly, but we still feel a strong concern about the market’s uncontrolled development. Although our net revenue, happily, is around the same level as last year so we lose market share as the market grows. The competition from unregulated gaming companies is intense. We call for swift and concrete measures from both politicians and authorities to ensure that the Swedish gaming market is healthy and safe.”
