Switzerland – Swiss bill submitted to allow online gaming

By - 23 October 2015

A bill has been submitted to the Swiss parliament paving the way for online casinos and low-stake poker tournaments.

Proposed by the federal government, the bill would also make winnings from all gambling, including the lottery, exempt from tax.

Switzerland’s 21 land-based casinos would be able to apply for a licence to set up online casinos.
The Swiss Federation of Casinos wants the laws introduced long before the 2019 deadline set out.

“Over the past few years Swiss casinos have been under extreme pressure,” it said. “The new law on gambling for money should take into account this evolution and create the conditions to allow Swiss casinos to be competitive.”

Swiss casino profits have fallen by 30 per cent since 2007 with estimations that Swiss casinos are losing CHF300m a year to foreign online casinos and illegal gaming clubs.

The introduction of low-stakes poker could see poker permitted outside casinos. Tournament organisers would need to apply to cantonal authorities for approval, games should have low initial bids and the total stake should be given back to players.
