The Netherlands – Holland Casino announces head office job losses

By - 27 November 2013

Holland Casino, The Netherlands state-owned casino operator, is planning to lay-off over a third of its head office staff as part of a change in strategy to allow it to better compete in the soon-to-be demonopolised Dutch gaming market.

More than 100 of its 300 head office staff are to lose their jobs. Last month Holland Casino announced that 150 jobs would go with Willem-Jan van den Dijssel, Chief Executive, saying the company had to reduce personnel costs by 18 per cent by November 1 in order to keep the business going.

The company stated: “With this new strategy, Holland Casino is laying the foundation for a more structurally sound company, which will be better prepared for the competition in an open casino market.”

Holland Casino had already laid off 350 jobs, reducing its workforce from 3,000 jobs. The operator is heading towards a loss of over €30m this year with debt expected to increase from €60m to €100m. The operator reduced its workforce by 800 between 2008 to 2012 during which time turnover dropped by 30 per cent. Revenues for the group, which operates 14 casinos nationwide, have been affected by dwindling attendance and lower spend per head.
