US – Suffolk Downed by Wynn’s casino victory

By - 22 September 2014

Having been beaten by the Wynn Everett proposal, Suffolk Downs racetrack will be shutting up shop claiming it cannot remain in operation without the casino license it had bid for in partnership Mohegan Sun.

Suffolk Downs was one of just two horse racetracks in Boston and the only thoroughbred track. It had invested US3.25m on lobbying for the licence.

Suffolk downs COO Chip Tuttle said: “We are extraordinarily disappointed as this action is likely to cost the Commonwealth thousands of jobs, small business and family farms. We will be meeting with employees and horsemen over the next several days to talk about how we wind down racing operations as a 79-year legacy of Thoroughbred racing in Massachusetts will be coming to an end, resulting in unemployment and uncertainty for many hard-working people.”

Mohegan Sun Massachusetts would have been a $1.3bn resort casino with two hotels and world-class dining, shopping and entertainment amenities on 42 of Suffolk Downs’ 52 acres in Revere. The resort casino will feature 5,000 gaming positions, a total of 500 hotel rooms, 170,000 square feet of floor space and a 10,000 square foot spa.
