Finland – Veikkaus brings betting limits and ID requirement to betting outlets

By - 7 June 2021

Finnish betting operator Veikkaus is introducing new betting laws on June 10, 2021, that will see customers making bets at points of sale such as shops, kiosks, traffic stations, restaurants and Veikkaus ‘own gaming venues having to have signed up as a Veikkaus’ Loyal Customer. Bets at these outlets will have a limit of €1,500.

The introduction of the authentication requirement in Pitkävedo is part of Veikkaus’ extensive responsibility program, which builds a safer and more responsible gaming environment and prevents problems caused by gambling. Veikkaus’ goal is for all gaming to be recognized by the end of 2023. The authentication requirement for decentralized slot machines came into force on 12 January.

In connection with the change, a customer and daily purchase limit of EUR 1,500 will apply to long-distance gaming at points of sale. In the future, the customer can play a long bet at the points of sale for a maximum of 1,500 euros per day.

Juha-Matti Mäkilä, Veikkaus’ betting director, said: “The condition of identification and the limit of the game in long-distance betting also mean that we are better able to prevent money laundering and match manipulations in fixed-odds betting, which has been the most sensitive to abuse as a game form. In Finland, match manipulations and related betting abuses have already become smaller than in our neighboring countries. We are now continuing this work with the identification requirement brought to Pitkäveto and the EUR 1,500 player and daily purchase limit for point-of-sale gaming.

At points of sale, identification can be done with either a Veikkaus card, a driving card, a personal card, a Kela card or a mobile card found in the Veikkaus application. The customer must be registered as a Veikkaus Loyal Customer in order to be able to play Long Bet in the future.

Requiring players to identify themselves also makes it easier to keep track of their own play, as when playing authenticated, all play is logged in the customer’s own game history. In addition, the reform will facilitate the age limit control of points of sale.

Veikkaus’ online service for gaming Pitkäveto is set to be renewed later this year, when Pitkäveto will move to a new gaming platform. The new gaming platform brings Longer Bet online gaming individual player-specific purchase limits, which are the same for all players. In addition, the online service promises several features that will improve the customer experience.
