Argentina – Chubut extends licences for Casino Club

By - 16 December 2013

The legislature of the province of Chubut has extended all of the casino licenses belonging to local gaming company Casino Club.

Owned by entrepreneur Cristóbal López as well as its operations in Chubut, Casino Club has the right to run the slot machines in the racino in downtown Buenos Aires and has a significant share of the floating casinos moored permanently to the city harbour. Casino Club presently runs all of the casinos in the province of Chubut.

The law, which was sent for approval by the local government, was approved unanimously by all 27 members and in record time. The law was put before the government on December 6th and was passed in less than a week and was, according to local news sources, passed in two minutes once it had been put forward for a vote. Government sources report that the new licences are valid for ten years with an option for renewal for a further five. According to the initial draft 93 percent of a special one off gaming tax would have been destined for local sports programmes. However, this was amended to give local municipalities more freedom to decide on the final destination of the additional revenue

The special one off gaming fee amounts to $142m pesos which will be disturbed amongst the different cities in the province.  Speaking to local press about the new act Deputy Argentina Martinez explained that “gaming funds usually go general treasury and are then distributed. We thought that there should be some recognition of the local communities.”

According to the terms of the new law a total of $9m pesos will go to the municipality of Comodoro. $44m will be destined for Trelew. $19m for Puerto Madryn, $11m for Rawson, $4.5m for Esquel, $2.9 for Rada Tilly and $1m pesos will go to the municipality of  Trevelin. The remaining $14m will be earmarked for The Institute of Social Assistance.
