Australia – The Star to find out if can add 1,000 new pokie machines to its mix

By - 15 August 2021

The New South Wales government is to consider allowing Star Sydney to operate an additional 1,000 poker machines as part of a proposal to transfer licences from under-performing machines in other areas of the state.

There are currently 96,000 poker machines across 4,000 venues in New South Wales with The Star accounting for 1,500 of those. The NSW government is expected to support the transfer of slot licences to the Star as it believes the casino’s gaming floor can be more tightly regulated than some smaller venues.

More than $2.2bn was spent on pokies in NSW pubs and clubs in the first four months of this year, with almost $600m spent in April alone, up 12.58 per cent on April 2019.
