Belgium – Belgium’s Council of State rejects petition against online gaming restrictions

By - 4 July 2019

The Belgian Council of State has rejected a request to reverse a Royal Decree limiting advertising for online gaming sites as well limiting player bets to €500 a week, bonuses at €275 a month and restricting payment by credit card.

Circus Belgium and two of its subsidiaries, Casino de Spa and Gambling Management (Casino de Namur) wanted the decree overruled. They were then joined by other online operators including Sagevas, B & M, Euro Tiercé, Derby, all of whom said their turnover would decrease drastically.

The Council of State said : “If the applicant companies report a risk of very significant decreases in their respective turnover and operating results, at no time have they argued that the contested royal decree would seriously endanger their economic survival to such a point that they all risk becoming bankrupt if the contested measures come into force. »
