Belgium – Work starts on new Middelkere casino

By - 2 March 2022

Construction of a new casino in the form of a harbour bollard officially started in the Belgian town of Middelkere last week with a planned investment of €42m.

The new casino is being built on the site of the old one on the town’s sea promenade. It will provide capacity for 1,700 people over four floors with a large gaming floor, a terrace, a foyer, meeting rooms, an underground car park and a hotel with 60 rooms. The official opening is scheduled for December 23, 2023.

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was performed by Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker (LDD) and Flemish Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters (Open VLD).

Mayor Dedecker said: “With this project of architectural splendor, we are returning to the splendor of the interwar period. The new casino will be so much more than a beautiful building. I believe it will increase our local commerce, tourism appeal and recreational value for locals and tourists alike. Middelkerke lives from tourism and therefore speed is of the utmost importance.”

The ambitious infrastructure project was designed by the Dutch architects Zwarts en Jansma in the form of a harbor bollard.
