The Sports Commission (CEsp) is scheduled to meet on Wednesday (21) at 10:30 AM, with five items on the agenda. Two of these are projects regulating the advertising of sports betting companies and services.

One of the projects restricts the times when these advertisements can be aired (PL 2985/2023). The original text proposed by  Senator Styvenson Valentim, banned any communication promoting sports betting. In his report  Senator Carlos Portinho, allowed the advertisements to be aired from 10 PM to 6 AM on radio and television, while maintaining the prohibition for the internet and other platforms.

The second project, introduced by Senator Eduardo Girão, prohibits the participation of celebrities in the advertising of betting on sports events (PL 3405/2023). The rapporteur, Sérgio Petecão, included referees and former referees among the personalities who will not be able to promote sports betting.

According to the Senate News Agency, if approved by the CEsp, the matters will be forwarded to the analysis of the Committee on Communication and Digital Law (CCDD), which will have the final say on the matter.

On April 9, the CEsp held a public hearing aimed at supporting the discussions on the two projects concerning advertisements for sports betting. During the event, senators and experts questioned the effectiveness of the current legal restrictions on advertisements.
