Cambodia – Authorities confirm 91 casinos have shut following ban

By - 10 January 2020

Following an industry wide ban on online and arcade gambling operations, 91 casinos have been shut down according to Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance. A joint committee comprising ministry officials and police have been inspecting the nation’s casinos since the ban was installed at the beginning of January.

Ros Phearun, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, said: “All arcade gambling operations in the Kingdom have completely ceased after the ban. After ceasing online gambling, some casinos are still going to operate for one or two months to see if they can make earnings but we believe more casinos will cease their business.”

Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Prime Minister, announced in August 2019 that the Kingdom would cease issuing online gaming licenses and would not renew any licenses beyond their current expirations.
So far, the ban has left thousands of people unemployed. Phearun added: We think that many jobs are available in our province. We do not only depend on casinos. We have special economic zones where many workers are recruited from other industries.”
