Cambodia – Macau Legend buys land for Integrated Resort in Cambodia

By - 2 January 2019

Macau casino group Macau Legend Development Limited has spent $90m buying several parcels of land in Siem Reap Province, in Cambodia, on which it intends to build an integrated resort (IR).

The company said: “The acquisition of the land by the group is intended for construction and development of integrated resort in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, allowing the Group to take part in and benefit from the tourism industry of Cambodia, which is important for the Group’s long-term development as well as the broadening of its revenue base.”

However, Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance’s General Department of Financial Industry Deputy Director General Ros Phirun denied that the ministry had received any proposal from Macau Legend, stressing that a casino development in Siem Reap would not be approved by government.

“The question is whether the investment plan for integrated resort includes a casino or not. If there is no casino or gambling activity in the project, that is fine. But it should know that the gambling business is not allowed in Siem Reap,” Phirun said.

Macau Legend operates Babylon and Legend Palace casinos in Macau, as well Savan Legend Resorts Hotel and Entertainment Complex in Laos.
