Chile – Over 2,000 new outdoor slots could flood Chile

By - 14 October 2013

The introduction of anti-smoking law legislation in Chile has helped stub out 21 per cent in casino revenues from last year’s figures, forcing operators to install slot machines in outdoor areas where players can play and smoke at the same time.

Smoking gaming zones can only be opened following official authorisation from Chile’s regulator; Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ).
SCJ revealed that there are already four casinos licensed to operate slots in outdoor spaces. A spokesperson at Chile’s leading casino, Monticello Grand Casino, said: “We are building areas for smokers to gamble. We are developing covered outdoor patios in rule with the new regulations and that will help deliver new alternatives for entertainment.”
Analysts believe that in total, Chilean operators will install 2,000 new slot machines for the outdoor play areas.
