China – MGM tops off on second Macau casino

By - 9 November 2015

MGM China has celebrated a momentous happening in the company’s history with the topping off of MGM Cotai, the second integrated resort of MGM China in Macau.

The Guests of Honour, including senior executives from China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited, hung fortune ornaments onto the pine tree which is later lifted to the highest beam of the building, signifying wishes for a smooth completion of MGM Cotai.

MGM Cotai has been designed to represent the “jewellery box” of Cotai and plans to offer approximately 1,500 hotel rooms and suites, meeting space, high end spa, retail offerings and food and beverage outlets as well as the first international Mansion at MGM for the ultimate luxury experience. It will offer Asia’s first dynamic theater and a spectacle to wow every guest who steps foot in our resort. MGM Cotai is being developed to drive greater product diversification and bring more advanced and innovative forms of entertainment to Macau as it grows as a global tourist destination.

The ceremony was a combination of Chinese and Western traditions, echoing the success of MGM China with the union of both cultures. The Guests of Honor first gathered for a Chinese Bai Sun Ceremony of incense offering and roasted pig-cutting. Then a Western ritual was carried out with a pine tree being lifted to the highest beam of the building, along with eight fortune ornaments hung by the Guests of Honor to signify their wishes for a smooth completion of MGM COTAI, targeted to open in 2016. The very iconic emblem of MGM – the Golden Lion will be guarding the Cotai property at 11m tall, gilded in imported 23carat gold leaves.

MGM CEO Jim Murren said: “MGM is synonymous with world class entertainment and customer service. We are raising the bar here in Macau and are proud to be developing a never-been-seen-before design and entertainment experience at MGM Cotai. Today is a milestone for MGM’s history, and we are one more step closer to unveiling MGM Cotai. When we open in 2016, this property will surely be a must- see attraction and a welcomed addition in making Macau a global tourism destination.”

Pansy Ho said, “I am proud to have been partners with MGM since the beginning in 2007 when MGM MACAU opened. I’d like to give my heartfelt thank you to our team and to the Macau SAR government for giving our Company the opportunity to develop our resort in Cotai. To have witnessed the growth of the Company with our second property on the horizon is beyond wonderful. We see MGM Cotai as an opportunity for us to do more for the Macau community, to increase the diversification of our offerings and making Macau an even more desirable destination.”
