Cyprus – Temporary casino to open in Limassol next year

By - 16 November 2016

The Melco International/Hard Rock consortium could open a temporary casino in Limassol in Southern Cyprus by the end of 2017.

The group won the right to develop the first integrated casino resort in the Greek-owned southern part of the island. Ministers expect the 30-year licence to be granted in December. It will guarantee a monopoly for the first 15 years and as well as the main casino, it will see a satellite casino built in Nicosia, alongside three slot halls in Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.

The main integrated casino resort in Limassol is expected to be developed on land close to Limassol harbour and Lady’s Mile beach, and will be completed by early 2020. The aim is for the satellite casino in Nicosia to be open half way through next year 2017 with a temporary casino, most probably replacing the Monte Caputo nightclub on Amathus Avenue in Limassol, to open later in 2017.

Energy and Tourism Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis said ‘the bar’ had been set ‘very high’ and that people would be ‘impressed by the plans.’

The total investment will be €500m with the target to attract 300,000 visitors a year.
