Denmark – Danish gambling revenues fall as online overtakes sports betting

By - 15 April 2021

Danish gaming regulator Spillemyndigheden has confirmed that gambling revenue fell for the first time in eight years in 2020 due to the pandemic with revenues coming in at DKK6.00bn (€806.7m) during 2020 from DKK6.57bn in 2019.

With land-based shut, online gaming overtook sports betting for the first time to become the biggest earning vertical. Online gaming was up 4.5 per cent whilst sports betting was down 8.9 per cent. Land-based slots were down 29.3 per cent to DKK986m whilst revenue from bricks and mortar casinos were down 31.7 per cent to DKK239m.

Spillemyndigheden Director Anders Dorph said: “One might have expected that there would have been a marked increase in online casino games when the physical gaming halls and casinos were closed down and the opportunities to bet on sports were severely limited. However, that is far from the case. Although online casino increased a bit, it is the smallest increase since 2012, and it therefore far outweighs the massive decline we have seen in the other areas.”
