Finland – Ministry maintains monthly and daily loss limits for Veikkaus’ fast rhythm games

By - 21 June 2021

The Finnish Ministry of the Interior has issued a decree on the monthly and daily loss limits for Veikkaus’ fast-paced online games on July 1.

Veikkaus said: “In accordance with the decree issued by the Ministry of the Interior on 18 June 2021, the maximum daily loss limit for Veikkaus’ fast rhythm online games is 1.7. starting permanently at €500. The maximum monthly loss limit is €2,000. The daily loss limit for fast-paced rhythm games has been lowered by a decree of the Ministry of the Interior from €1,000 to €500 since 1 May 2020, due to an exceptional situation caused by the corona epidemic.”

The provision contained in the regulation has since been extended until June 30 2021 and is now being made permanent.

Examples of fast-paced games include casino and slot games. In addition to the maximum loss limit, all players are still required by the regulation to always set their own daily and monthly loss limits. Self-imposed limits cannot be higher than the maximum loss limits.

The purpose of the loss limits has been to prevent the disadvantages of gambling. Concerns about the problems posed by gambling addiction have been particularly evident in the changed daily life of the corona, which has also been associated with an increased risk of excessive gambling.

Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo added: “The reduced maximum loss limit has been in use for a year. Loss limits are a good way to prevent gambling harm. In addition to gambling problems, lowering the loss limit will combat over-indebtedness and livelihood problems, and I am pleased that the daily loss limit will be permanently reduced from €1,000 to €500.”

The maximum daily loss limit applies more directly to harmful play than the monthly limit. In the short run or on individual occasions, the loss of large sums is more often associated with problem gambling than high consumption spread over a longer period of time.
