France – Barriere to close poker site

By - 18 September 2013

French regulated online poker room Barriere Poker will terminate its website offering on September 30 after three years of operation. Barriere blames the economic conditions, and a “degradation of the French online poker market. The latest numbers published by French regulator, ARJEL, shows a sharp decline in the second quarter and the sixth straight quarterly decline in industry revenues.

A message on the Barriere website states that it thanks its players for support and alongside its strategic partner, Caesars Interactive, will seek to bring its products to the US market. The closure of Barriere is not unexpected and follows the closure of the Partouche site earlier this year. Many online other rooms have closed in the three years since French online poker was regulated as France determined to limit play to domestic players-only, restrict the type of games offered online and cripple operators with an unworkable tax rate. Regulated providers are thought to have lost €36m in 2012.
