France – FDJ reports good momentum in first quarter with sports betting up 25 per cent

By - 3 August 2021

French betting operator Française des Jeux (FDJ), the operator of France’s national lottery games, reported good momentum in its first quarter despite restrictions linked to the health crisis -with an increase in revenue of nearly nine per cent over the first half of 2019, and an increase in sports betting activity of 25 per cent.

The company’s entire point of sale network was back open from early June with the company saying there would be a a gradual acceleration of activity in the second quarter driven by the lottery point of sale, the reopening of bars, and UEFA Euro 2020.

The first quarter generated turnover of €1.1bn with bets of €9.2bn up eight per cent. The group reported progress on all activities with lottery up four per cent, sports betting up 25 per cent and digital bets representing 12 per cent of the total bets. It produced EBITDA of €261m, representing a margin of 24.1 per cent exceptionally amplified by a shift in commercial expenses in the second half.

Stéphane Pallez, CEO of the FDJ group, said: “The second quarter confirmed a recovery of our activities to levels higher than those recorded before the crisis. Our bets are increasing, both on digital and in our network of points of sale. Over the half-year as a whole, we thus recorded a turnover up by almost 9% compared to 2019. In the absence of new restrictive measures linked to the evolution of the health situation, the Group anticipates maintaining good momentum in the second half of the year and is confident in its business and results outlook while respecting its responsible gaming model.”

The Group reaffirmed its commitment to Responsible Gaming and the fight against underage gambling by systematically accompanying its lottery and sports betting advertisements with dedicated messages.

FDJ forecasts for the entire 2021 financial year, outlays of around €18.8bn for a turnover of €2.2bn with an EBITDA margin rate greater than or equal to 22 per cent
