Germany – Bremer Toto and Lotto GmbH confirmed as new owners of Bremer Spielbank

The Bremen Senate has confirmed that state-owned Bremer Toto and Lotto GmbH will take over the operations of the Bremer Spielbank in North Rhine-Westphalia, comprising of two casinos in Bremen and Bremerhaven, currently belonging to the Westspiel group. The rest of Westspiel’s casinos have recently been bought by the Gauselmann group.
Bremen Senator for Finance Dietmar Strehl said: “With the takeover of the Bremer Spielbank, we continue to ensure responsible and serious gaming in Bremen and Bremerhaven. We are committed to a high level of protection for players. Prevention of gambling addiction will continue to be an important part of the Bremer Spielbank in the future.”
The City of Breman changed its casino ownerships laws so that the local government could takeover ownership of the two casinos in Bremen and Bremerhaven and prevent the privitisation of the casinos and instead wants them run by government-owned Bremen Toto und Lotto GmbH.
Around 100 employees currently work at the casinos in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Bremen received around €7m from the casino tax in 2019. Before the operational reigns can be passed over, the budget and finance committee of the Bremen citizenship must first approve the project.
