The German state of Hessen has approved the new State Treaty on gaming with the new laws passed on Thursday in the state parliament in Wiesbaden.

The new state treaty, which will open the gaming market to online providers, is due to come into force on July 1. According to the new laws, online poker and online casinos will be permitted in Germany whilst the operation of amusement arcades will be made more difficult due to new minimum distance laws.

Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) said: “With the new State Treaty on Gambling, we are strengthening player and youth protection in Germany and Hesse.”
