Germany – Lotto BW extends support for Gambling Research Centre

By - 14 March 2022

Lotto Baden-Württemberg, one of the founding members of the Gambling Research Centre of the University of Hohenheim, is extending its support for the successful establishment and by providing €100,000.

“We would like to continue to contribute to the fact that scientifically independent findings can be incorporated into gambling regulation,” says Managing Director Georg Wacker on the renewed financial commitment of Lotto Baden-Württemberg. “Hohenheim has been a nationally recognized and valued beacon in gambling research for many years. In addition, there are the annual symposia, which have developed into a first-class industry meeting far beyond Germany,” the Lotto boss continues.

After 2020 and 2021, Lotto BW will once again support the research centre with an additional 100,000 euros for one year in parallel to the annual membership fee of 15,000 euros. The state of Baden-Württemberg also secures scientific gambling research with a further 100,000 euros.

Founded in 2004, the university research centre investigates gambling from different perspectives and according to scientific methods. The work is supported by around 25 scientists from various disciplines such as law, economics, psychology and sociology. The Research Centre cooperates nationally and internationally with numerous institutions.

The Staatliche Toto-Lotto GmbH belongs entirely to the state of Baden-Württemberg through the investment company. The company is headquartered at Stuttgart’s Löwentor. The backbone and figurehead are the 3,150 licensed lottery acceptance points with about 12,000 employees. They generate around 80 percent of the total stakes, which amounted to 1.073bn in 2021.
