Germany – Paul Gauselmann donates 85,000 trees to combat climate change

By - 6 December 2020

By the end of the year, 3,000 trees will be planted in an area near the city of Rutesheim in the Stuttgart area.

The initiative “Trees for Life” from the entrepreneur Paul Gauselmann is behind the campaign. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, he donated 85,000 trees to set an example in the fight against climate change. So far, 34,000 trees have been planted in cooperation with the partner Trinkwasserwald® eV. Paul Gauselmann’s “Trees for Life” initiative is active nationwide and, through reforestation campaigns, enables new forests with a high degree of diversity to emerge.

“Since the Gauselmann Group operates a number of subsidiaries, such as the manufacturer for money processing system solutions HESS Cash Systems from Magstadt, adp Gauselmann GmbH in Pleidelsheim or branches of the popular MERKUR CASINO arcade chain in the Stuttgart area, we wanted to be active in reforesting forests through the Support the ‘Trees for Life’ initiative, ”explains Mario Hoffmeister, Head of the Central Communication Department of the Gauselmann Group.

The association Trinkwasserwald eV is responsible for the execution. With the help of donations and activities of the association members, it has already converted over 2,600 hectares of coniferous forest monocultures into healthy and sustainable mixed deciduous forests since 1995. Together with the responsible forester Ulrich Neumann, the association selected an area in the city of Rutesheim that had been damaged by the bark beetle and the storm Sabine. Sessile oaks and winter linden trees will now be planted on the 0.5 hectare area until the end of the year.

“It is important to select the right young plants in close coordination with the responsible forester. He has the experience of which tree species can assert themselves on the area in the long term and withstand the changed climatic conditions in the coming decades. Our goal is to reforest the most suitable, but also diverse, plantings, because monocultures are always more susceptible to pests or external influences, ”explains Alexander Pillath from partner Trinkwasserwald® eV

“Every single action we carry out is a powerful symbol! Our nature and the world climate have gotten into serious trouble, ”explains Heiner Rupsch, 1st Chairman of the Trinkwasserwald eV, the concerns of the non-profit association and the importance of the“ Trees for Life ”initiative. “High temperatures and a lack of precipitation in the past two years have ecologically reached a socially relevant dimension. Trinkwasserwald® eV therefore welcomes the fact that Paul Gauselmann is setting this strong impulse as a role model, because for all of us forest also means: W (We) A (all) L (live) D (from it). And the reforestation campaigns benefit our descendants,” added Heiner Rupsch.

The “Trees for Life” initiative aims to make a sustainable contribution to the climate by reforesting forests in Germany. The central goal of the project is to plant a total of 85,000 deciduous trees on reforestation areas in the next few years so that new forests with a high degree of diversity can arise. The founder of the “Trees for Life” initiative is the entrepreneur Paul Gauselmann. On his 85th birthday in 2019, he decided not only to talk about the important topic of the environment, but also to make a contribution to climate protection himself. For every year of life he donated 1,000 trees and thus initiated the project “Trees for Life”, which will benefit the new and reforestation of forests.
