Gibraltar – Fire interrupts Gibraltar’s online industry

By - 22 April 2014

Much of Gibraltar’s online gaming sector was forced offline as a power station fire interrupted Gibtelecom services affecting companies such as Ladbrokes, William Hill and Betfred.

The fire, which was caused by a power station generator that exploded due to mechanical problems, interrupted operations at William Hill for two and a half hours.
William Hill Spokesman Graham Sharpe, said: “It is just one of those freak events nobody could have predicted. There will be those who will claim they would have backed a winner but there will be others who have been saved from backing a loser.”

Ladbrokes said in a statement: “We apologise to the customers who were affected by the loss of some of those services on Sunday afternoon and have been working hard and successfully to restore these. None of our staff were affected by the incident, and no customer data was compromised during that period.”

Betfred was forced offline for six hours. It tweeted: “Please be aware that all services are currently down. We’re working hard to resolve this issue and will update all customers once resolved.”
