By - 25 February 2013

An Israeli business man wants to build a €500m resort casino on the Greek island of Crete.

The plan is to develop a five-star hotel unit comprising luxury tourism accommodation, a conference center, a spa, sports facilities, a shopping mall, a Cretan theme park and a casino.

Mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis, said the group has warned the development would only go ahead if the government speeds up the licensing process.

The group behind the plan want the Finance Ministry to activate a law dating back to 1994 which provides for the operation of a casino on Crete. Businesses people on the island have pushed for two casinos, one in the east and another in the west.
