Greece – Theros shuts Porto Rio Hotel & Casino following union demands

By - 29 November 2018

Following a series of disputes with its employees, Theros International Gaming has closed the doors to its Porto Rio Hotel & Casino in Greece with no indication as to when it might open again.

The casino, located close to the city of Patras, situated overlooking the Korinthian bay, in western Greece, has been locked in disagreements with its staff over pay. Its GGR have fallen by 74 per cent over the past six years. Staff, who were told to accept a 25 per cent pay decrease and less hours, have gone on strike with some claiming they haven’t been paid for 14 months.

Dimitris Karageorgopoulos, General Secretary at the Greek Federation of Private Casinos and the Vice President of Casino Rio Employees Union, highlighted that workers were owed €5m and wanted an immediate payment of €800,000 to avoid the strike.

On Sunday the casino sent a letter to its employees accusing the union of jeopardising the casino’s survival. “The shutdown of the casinos is entirely due to on-going attempts by employment unions to confiscate the casino’s money reserves. The casino has to protect its existence.”

Theros, who also operates casinos in Corfu and Alexandroupoli, said that three investors are interested in coming on board to solve the situation.

It added that the investors though wanted to first see a period of stability.
