Italy – Campione forced to wait a few more weeks due to spread of Omicron

By - 5 January 2022

The traditional tables were ready to be manned, the latest generations of slot machines were ready to be switched on and the New Year’s Eve party had attracted a large number of Italian and foreign customers, but still the Casino di Campione did not open.

The reason for the delay this time was the unforeseen rise of the Omicron variant and the return across Europe of pandemic lockdowns and restrictions.

The casino said: “We wanted to enhance the importance of people at all levels and, therefore, the sustainability of a system and its future development. Sorry for the customers who were awaiting the imminent restart of the company, but the protection of health and the desire to start again in the best possible situation made it necessary to make a responsible decision.”

The aim now is to reopen before the end of January although this, like most other things in the current climate, is entirely dependent on the control on the spread of COVID-19.
