By - 1 November 2019

The World Count of Gaming Machines, research carried out by the Gaming Technologies Association, organisers of the Australasian Gaming Expo, pitches the number of gaming machines installed legally worldwide in 2018 at 7,402,395.

It listed Japan as having the most number of gaming machines, 4,302,731, with a decrease of 4.92 per cent over the year. These pachinko machines make up 58 per cent of the world’s total.

The US was second with 898,974 machines, a two per cent increase from 2017. The total in the US made up 11.54 per cent of the world’s total. Italy came third with 320,000 gaming machines, Germany fourth with 277,700 whilst Australia was fifth with 196,301 machines, a decrease of 720 machines from 2017 to 2018. Australia had just 2.6 per cent of the world’s legally installed machines. The UK came sixth with 183,813 machines followed by Spain with 183,409. The top ten was completed with Canada, Argentina and Colombia.

Chris Muir, CEO of Gaming Technologies Association, said: “The 2018 edition of GTA’s annual worldwide survey of gaming machine numbers once again dispels myths around the proportion of gaming machine numbers in Australia. This survey confirms that Australian gaming machines have some of the world’s lowest maximum bet limits which is consistent with what we have found in previous surveys.”

GTA has commissioned the World Count of Gaming Machines since 1999. This document has illustrated the evolving nature of the industry both in Australia and in other countries, and has provided a measure of where Australia is positioned in relation to other regulated countries throughout the world.
