Japan – Melco pulls out of Osaka bid to put ‘Yokohama First’

By - 19 September 2019

Melco Resorts and Entertainment has come out with a Yokohama First policy, ending its interest in Osaka as a site for a resort project.

The move leaves MGM Resorts, Genting Singapore and Galaxy Entertainment battling it out for a licence in Osaka and pitches Melco against Las Vegas Sands and a host of other operators in Yokohama.

Melco has been a long-time supporter of Yokohama’s suitability to host one of Japan’s first integrated resorts. It highlighted the city’s ‘convenient location, communication links, vibrancy and pioneering spirit make it an ideal candidate for a large-scale development designed specifically for premium international tourists.’

Melco’s Chairman Lawrence Ho Yau Lung said: “Yokohama First means that “the incredible team of experts and talents we have assembled will focus on bringing to Yokohama the best IR the world has ever seen.

“Our team is well-positioned to contribute to Yokohama’s future and to support the community in its ambition to become a global tourism destination. This is a commitment to the city, our partners, and the community there,” he added.“I would like to thank the city of Osaka for their consideration and for constructive dialogues that we have had with them. They demonstrated a very professional approach in their commitment to build an IR in Yumeshima. I would like to personally thank the Osaka government for the collaborative discussions we had with them over the years.”

Over the last year, Melco has demonstrated its commitment and support to Yokohama through a series of local events across the city, including a long-term partnership with the Yokohama F Marinos. As further demonstration of Melco’s strong and continued commitment to Yokohama, Melco is expanding its dedicated team that is focused on developing an IR plan for the City, and has already secured an office in Minato Mirai area that will be opening shortly.
