Japan – Osaka casino won’t affect revenues at Asia’s existing casino resorts

By - 17 April 2023

Analysts at JP Morgan don’t believe the arrival of Japan’s first casino resort in Osaka, to be operated by MGM Resorts, will have any material impact on Asia’s other casinos with Osaka’s player base to come predominantly from Japan’s populace of 125m.

JP Morgan analysts DS Kim and Mufan Shi highlighted that long lead times in the casino’s development will see any negative impact years away, adding that it would be minimal anyway

The analysts said: “At this stage, we conjecture that the majority of demand is likely to come from local Japanese demand (like any other major gaming jurisdictions globally), and this is likely to be created incrementally ‘supply drives demand’ as the decade-old mantra in the industry goes. Hence, we do not foresee any material impact on existing jurisdictions in Asia. Time will tell, and we shall find out in 7 to 8 years.”
