Lichtenstein – Casinos Austria due to hear verdict on second Lichtenstein casino

By - 2 September 2019

Casinos Austria should find out in the next few days if it will be able to operate a casino in the Coop building in Balzn, Lichtenstein, as it awaits a ruling by the district court of Vaduz.

An injunction has been lodged by local residents who fear noise pollution in the village will rise as a result of any casino opening. It is very likely though that the court will dismiss the lawsuit. Casinos Austria remains confident. “For us it remains clear that we will soon have the go-ahead and begin operations,” a spokesperson said, adding they were happy to talk to local residents to appease any fears over added noise.

Attorney Thomas Geiger, representative of the ‘No casino in the village’ group, presented results of private measurements to prove the current noise emissions around the Coop building along with a traffic data analysis. “The evaluation shows that more than 1,000 vehicles drive past the property in question every day,” explained Mr. Geiger.

Patrick Roth, representing the building’s owners ITW, said: “These measurements prove nothing at all. We are ready to take more noise control measures at our expense than would be required.”

He highlighted that only a minority of the 11 claimants would be directly affected by the casino in Balzers. The vast majority live away from it – or do not live in Liechtenstein at all.

Casinos Austria opened its first casino in Lichtenstein, Casino Schaanwald, in October 2017.
