Merkur Spielbanken NRW officially celebrated the start of a new Merkur Casino construction project in Siegburg with a groundbreaking ceremony in the presence of prominent guests from politics, business and urban society.

The casino is being built on an area of more than 1,600 square metres, as a modern entertainment and play paradise, opening in the Siegburg industrial park by autumn 2026. The company is investing around €35m in the new casino, which will not only create a new leisure offer for the region, but will also provide an important economic impetus for the entire region.

“The construction of Merkur Spielbank Siegburg is an important milestone for our company and the opening next year is another chapter in the success story of Merkur Spielbanken. With the casino location in Siegburg, we are bringing a new entertainment hotspot with supra-regional appeal to the Rhein-Sieg district. Together with our partners, we are pleased to have taken this important step towards a successful future today,” said David Schnabel, CEO of Merkur Group’s casinos.

In order to offer a first impression of the future entertainment offer, the casino operator staged a special stage program as part of the groundbreaking ceremony, which offered a melange of the largest game show formats and live music.

Mr. Schnabel added: “The aspect of live entertainment plays a prominent role in our casinos. With ‘Bingo with Cassy’, we will bring Germany’s largest and most successful bingo event series to Siegburg and prove to all guests how varied and exciting a visit to the casino is.”

Presenter and podcaster Amira Aly, who actively supported the groundbreaking ceremony, said: “Since I am currently closely involved in building my own house, I can understand this exciting moment for the Merkur casinos very well. Today we got a first authentic impression of what will be built here, I am really impressed.”

Particular importance will be attached to the topic of sustainability in the construction of the casino: The Merkur Spielbank Siegburg will be equipped with a modern photovoltaic system, which will cover a significant part of the energy demand from renewable sources. In addition, the outer façade of the building will be provided with extraordinary greenery and a meadow orchard will be created on the site. “Sustainability is a fundamental concern that runs through all phases of the project,” emphasized David Schnabel. In addition, the casino will provide e-charging stations for cars and bicycles.

The current plans expect 160,000 visitors per year, which will certainly mean further positive impulses for the local economy in addition to the casino visit, as the city announced, around 160,000 visitors are expected annually, including about 125,000 day tourists. These are expected to bring around 2 million euros per year to the local economy – especially in trade, hospitality and the service industry. “The new casino strengthens the city of Siegburg as an attractive excursion destination and contributes to the diversification of local sources of income in the long term,” explained Mayor Stefan Rosemann.

Around 100 employees will also find new employment at the Merkur Spielbank Siegburg, which will bring not only economic but also social impulses to the city. The recruiting process will start on 1 December in order to recruit motivated employees for a wide variety of professional fields – from match operations and gastronomy to administration.
