Mexico – Mexico law could include two Las Vegas style resorts

By - 19 January 2015

The Mexican government may designate two zones which would allow for Las Vegas style gaming.

According to the Director General of Gaming and Raffles María Marcela González Salas, there is rising interest within the government in having two “major centres” in the next three years.

“The President, the Secretary of Tourism, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Economy, see having a couple of centres as a possibility,” she told press adding that these areas would not only include casinos but theatres, entertainment centres as well as exhibition and convention centres.
“There would be a couple of centres where they would be shows of all kinds where there could be boxing matches and sports as well as shows. Internationally renowned singers and casinos could lead to an explosion in growth,” she went onto say.

Salas also said that a number of Chinese and American businesses have shown a keen interest in becoming involved in the project. But emphasised the fact that a number of safeguards needed to be put in place first. “What they require like any other business is judicial certainty and that is what we will work on,” she said.

Mexico’s wide sweeping new gaming law will be considered by the Senate next month and includes designating “zones of interest” where large scale casinos and other faculties could be constructed in the future.

These would be chosen after a government review into the best sites which would encourage tourism and economic activity in specific areas while the newly appointed National Institute of Games within the Interior Ministry will consult local and state governments on the issue.

The new gaming centres would also be designed to attract foreign tourists. In September Fernando Zárate Salgado President of the Commission of Gaming in the Chamber of Deputies referred to the possibility that large scale casino resort could be built in Mexico saying that if the government did go ahead with green lighting the project then they would be most likely built in already popular tourist resorts such as Cancun, Puerto Peñasco, Puerto Progreso or in some other tourist spots in Baja California that have access to the ocean. He went on to say that it would be determined later where specifically they would be and how many hectares these casinos would encompass.
