Mexico – Mexico ready for new Gaming Act

By - 7 February 2014

Mexico’s Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong has told press that there are no longer any casinos operating outside the terms of their licenses and that Mexico will soon pass a new gaming act which will allow for much further control and transparency when it comes to gaming.

Speaking at a press conference in the city of Mérida in the state of Yucatán, Osorio Cong said the Interior Ministry (SEGOB) has over recent months been able to close over 40 illegal gaming operations and has been working closely alongside both local and federal authorities.

He said: “What I can tell you is that at this moment from out of those (gaming operations) which are already established we have fortunately not found one which is operating outside the margins of the law. Some are in a legal process and we will have to wait for the legal decision when it comes to those.”

Osorio Chong also told press that his ministry is working on a new gaming law along with a special committee currently charged with investigating the industry in Mexico and met with law makers last week to discuss a new gaming act.

“We have been working with the Special Committee which was established in the House of Representatives, we are even talking about a new law, we are talking about transparency when it comes to the exact conditions in which this

industry now finds itself,” he said.

The minister went onto say that the committee along with SEGOB will continue to investigate the conditions under which every licence in Mexico has been handed out in the past. Osorio’s Chong’s statements reinforce SEGOB’s commitment to upcoming change in the gaming sector a commitment which was first outlined last August.

In August he said that his ministry would work closely with the special investigative committee to analyse possible changes to Mexico’s gaming laws and agreed to assist and work closely with the committee in order to investigate those casinos operating illegally in Mexico. The committee first went into session in April in 2013 and has been charged with investigating how gaming licences have been granted in the past and to make recommend changes to Mexico’s antiquated gaming laws.
