Nepal – Hyatt Regency Kathmandu closes following union wrangles

By - 19 June 2019

Hotel Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has confirmed it has temporarily ceased operating in Nepal and won’t be accepting any bookings until a dispute with trade unions was resolved.

The 5-star property, which is home to Casino Tara, is run by Taragaon Regency Hotels. The company said ‘unnecessary disruptions’ forced by the All Nepal Hotel, Casino and Restaurant Workers Union had caused the closure.

Mukti Dahal, President of the hotel’s trade union, said: “We only asked the management to fulfil clauses mentioned in our agreement letter, but they have not bothered to address our concerns. Moreover, they started exploiting us.”

Taragaon, who reported a 14.3 per cent increase in revenue and 29.5 per cent increase in profit in the last quarter said: “Due to the protest, we are unable to provide necessary services to customers. The hotel is working with all parties involved to resolve the dispute at the earliest possible, but until then the hotel will temporarily cease operations and not accept any bookings.”
