North Marianas – Tinian Mayor moves to form Gaming Commission

By - 8 January 2016

Having taken steps towards its reopening, Tinian Mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas remains hopeful that the casino will reopen even though the operator behind Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino filed for bankruptcy on December 11 and in light of several ‘wilful and repeat violations.’

The Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission ruled that for the casino to reopen, there must be a fully functioning gaming commission.

Mayor San Nicolas has named five nominees to the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission last month: Antonio SN. Borja, Jose Kiyoshi, Jose Dela Cruz, David Cing, and Charlene Lizama.

The mayor said: “It is my hope that the casino will soon reopen so that it may begin generating much needed revenues that supplement many essential programs and delivery of services for the people of Tinian. The Gaming Act as codified under 10 CMC, Section 2521(b) states that the mayor shall appoint from a list of qualified candidates. As you can see from the language of the Gaming Act, like appointments to other boards and commissions within the CNMI, the appointment of a commissioner is a discretionary function of the sitting mayor. This list shall be composed by the Office of the Mayor and include nominees from all Tinian political parties which are registered with the Commonwealth of Board of Elections.”
