Philippines – Suncity confident of a 2022 soft opening for Westside City

By - 29 September 2020

Asian operator Suncity has said despite disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it remains on track to debut the Westside City casino resort in Manila towards the end of 2022 with a grand opening early in 2023.

“Whilst we are confident that we could stick to the grand opening schedule of Westside City Project in 2023, we would like to open the doors of the casino floor as early as possible, targeting 2022 year-end,” the company said.

Hong Kong-listed Suncity said that piling work had been ‘disrupted’ in June because of the pandemic, but said it had now started again and that ground breaking work would kick-off ‘soon.’

Suncity signed a 20-year lease agreement with Travellers International Hotel Group and Westside to build and operate the casino and hotel at Manila’s Westside City Resorts World. Covering 182,000 square metres, it will offer 400 gaming tables and 1,200 slot machines across both VIP and mass gaming. The hotel will offer 400 five-star hotel rooms and 960 parking spaces. It will also offer a high-end pool club, a Grand Theatre, a retail mall and 2,000 parking spaces.

Suntrust will be the ‘sole and exclusive operator and manager of the Main Hotel Casino.’ It will pay annual rent of US$10.6m with the lease running until August 2039 at which time it will be automatically renewed for another 25 years unless otherwise agreed by all parties.
